Below are details of some of the confirmed speakers for the TICA Conference.
- Dr Stephanie Dancer BSc, MB.BS, MSc, MD, FRCPath, DTM&H
· Stephanie works in NHS Lanarkshire (Consultant in Microbiology and Infection Control) and was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hospital Infection for the past five years. She has worked in various remote areas of the world, including Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Canadian High Arctic where she resuscitated 30 000 year old organisms from glacial ice. She spent 6 years as the Infection Control Officer for Argyll before moving to Health Protection Scotland as their inaugural microbiologist. There, she set up MRSA surveillance for Scotland, evaluated real-time PCR for the rapid identification of MRSA, and helped establish the Scottish Microbiology Forum. She has been an active member of several UK national working groups on antibiotic prescribing and hospital cleaning. Stephanie was a formal referee for the Scottish Health Technology Assessment on MRSA screening and is now a member of the UK Health Technology Assessment Board for Diagnostic Methods and Screening. She is the external examiner for the University of Highlands & Islands MSc in Infection Prevention & Control. She recently presented at the International Hospital Infection Society Conference and Lancet Infectious Diseases conferences on issues related to environmental cleanliness and HAIs. At present she balances clinical and editorial duties with various research projects on MRSA
- Professor Tom Riley, University of Western Australia
- Tom Riley holds a Personal Chair in Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Western Australia and is a Principal Research Scientist at PathWest Laboratories. Tom has had a long standing interest in healthcare-related infections, particularly the diagnosis, pathogenesis and epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection, and the antimicrobial activity of Australian native plants. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, the Australian Society for Microbiology, and the American Academy of Microbiology, and has published over 250 book chapters and refereed journal articles. Professor Riley is considered Australia’s leading experts in C.difficile
- Professor Nicholas Graves, Qld University of Technology.
- Nick Graves is Professor of Health Economics with a joint appointment in the Institute of Biomedical and Health Innovation, School of Public Health, Queensland University of Technology and the Centre for Healthcare Related Infection Control and Surveillance, Queensland. He supervises PhD students, teaches economics to post-graduate students and has made research contributions of international significance publishing in AIDS, Health Economics, Lancet Infectious Diseases, The Journal of Infectious Diseases and Emerging Infectious Diseases. Nick has a particular interest in the economics associated with healthcare associated infections and one of his current research projects is evaluating the national hand hygiene initiative.
- Ms Sylvia Gandossi
- Sylvia is a registered nurse with significant experience in both clinical and management positions in nursing and infection control. Sylvia is member of the current AICA Executive and was a member of the NHMRC Committee responsible for writing the current Australian Infection Control Guidelines. Her main areas of interest are the infection prevention and control aspects of risk management, aged, office-based and community care. Sylvia consults in these areas in Western Australia and is a highly respected consultant in these field
- Dr John Ferguson, Hunter New England
- Dr Ferguson is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist. He is currently Director of Infection Prevention and Control for Hunter New England Health (HNEH). He is a member of the Therapeutic Guidelines Antibiotic Writing Group, Chair of the ACSQHC HAI national Advisory Committee, Convenor of HISCIG (special interest group of the Australasian Society of Infectious Diseases). John interests include multi-resistant organism control and antibiotic stewardship. John a very well respected advocate of the HAI agenda in Australia.
- Chris Hunt, Eldercare, South Australia
- Christine is a registered nurse and Credentialed ICP. She currently holds position as Business Improvement Specialist with Eldercare Incorporated, which includes coordinating Infection Control programs across 12 residential aged care facilities. In this role she has refined infection definitions for use by all Eldercare facilities, and conducted several corporate Infection Prevention projects and improvement initiatives.
- Phil Russo, Project Manager, Hand Hygiene Australia
- Phil has considerable experience in the area of HAI having worked as an infection control consultant in Alfred Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Southern Health. Phil was the first Operational Director of VICNISS and is now the project manager of Hand Hygiene Australia. Phil completed his Masters in Epidemiology in 2001 and is also the Chair of the National Consultative Committee, reviewing the structure of the AICA
· Dr Tara Anderson
- Dr Tara Anderson is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist. Dr Anderson is the current Director of the Infection Prevention and Control Unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital and has a particular interest in infection control, clinical infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship. An antimicrobial stewardship program was recently introduced at the Royal Hobart Hospital, with Dr Anderson playing an instrumental part of its development and implementation.
- Dr McGregor is an Infectious Disease Physician and Microbiologist who works at the Royal Hobart Hospital & the Tasmanian Infection Prevention & Control Unit. Alistair has been involved in the work of the ACSQHC and is a member of the national HAI Advisory Committee. Alistair was instrumental in the establishment of the TIPCU in Tasmania and has a particular interest and expertise in C.difficile infection.
- Saffron Brown, Tasmanian Infection Prevention & Control Unit
- Saffron works as a Clinical Nurse Consultant at the TIPCU, with previous infection control roles in Calvary Healthcare and the aged care sector. Saffron is a member of the ACSQHC Implementation Advisory Committee, has previous Executive roles with the TICA and has postgraduate qualification in sterilisation and disinfection. Saffron is a member of the TICA conference organising committee.
- Claire Boardman, AICA President, Infection Control Consultant
· Claire is an infection control consultant with over 18 years experience in infection control. Claire is currently working in far north Queensland in rural and remote areas (islands) (Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area). Previous to this position, Claire worked at VICNISS in Victoria. She is the current Australian Infection Control Association President, member of the ACSQHC national HAI Advisory Committee and is heavily involved in many national HAI prevention initiatives. Claire has completed a MPH majoring in International Health and Healthcare Economics.
- Professor Chris Baggoley, Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care
- Professor Baggoley is Chief Executive of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC). He is a specialist emergency physician and was previously Director of Emergency Medicine at three Adelaide facilities: Flinders Medical Centre, Ashford Community Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was also president of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, Chairman of the Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges and Chair of the Board of the National Institute of Clinical Studies. Prior to his role at ACSQHC he was Chief Medical Officer and Executive Director, Public Health and Clinical Coordination at the South Australian Department of Health.
- Dr Louise Cooley
- Dr Cooley is an Infectious Disease Physician and Microbiologist who works at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Calvary Healthcare (South). Louise is the current Director of Microbiology at the RHH, is a member of the ASID Clinical Research Network Committee and a member of the Public Health Laboratory Network. Louise’s particular clinical interests include refugee health
- Brett Mitchell, President TICA
- Brett is the current TICA president and heads up the TIPCU. Brett’s experience includes clinical & managerial nursing positions (Australia & overseas). Brettwas a member of the NHMRC Committee (Australian Infection Control Guidelines) & is a member of the national hand hygiene committee, HAI technical advisory committee and national consultative committee. Brett is currently undertaking doctoral studies in the area of HAIs.

Dr Chong Ong
- Dr Chong Ong is an Advanced Specialist Trainee in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology who currently works as the Microbiology Registrar at The Royal Hobart Hospital. In addition to diagnostic laboratory duties, Chong is also involved in Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship within the hospital. He has an interest in serological diagnosis of infectious diseases and phenotypic tests for identification of multi-resistant Gram negative organisms.
